In the previous entry in our blog series on transforming video calls into engaging and shareable video content, we gave our tips for recording video calls (read it here). This week in part two, we give five tips to edit zoom calls into dynamic video content for your webpages, social media profiles, email campaigns and more. When we’ve edited zoom interviews for clients, we have developed these steps to improve our process.

1. TRIM THE EXCESS

One core component of editing video calls is the ability to cut out any moments you’d rather not keep. Whether you plan to turn the call into long-form or short-form video content, going through the footage and trimming it down is crucial. Talking live through Zoom or Microsoft Teams will inevitably result in pauses, slip-ups and technical difficulties, which should be tidied up in post. By trimming the excess, the conversation can be tightened and refined, making it flow better for your audience.

2. GET CREATIVE WITH CUTS

Following on from the previous point, you should avoid having your video cut in typical places. Rather than only cutting where sentences end or speakers change, have the audio overlap over cuts (see above screenshot). This will demonstrate that you’ve put thought into your video content and allow the conversation to flow.

3. BRAND YOUR VIDEO CALL

If you intend to use your edited video calls as part of your marketing strategy, branding is essential. For consistency, ensure you consult your brand guidelines (if you have any).

There are several ways you can brand your video call. One suggestion is title cards. You can also use fonts, frames, logo placement and colour palettes to brand your content.

4. INTRODUCE ADDITIONAL GRAPHICS

Alongside visual branding, introducing graphics or animations can help your video call feel less webcam-heavy. They can also illustrate complex talking points and add emphasis to key moments. These can be anything from bullet-point lists to graphs and diagrams. Editing in presentation slides is another way to break up the webcam footage.

5. MAKE IT ACCESSIBLE

Creating captions for your video can be time-consuming when done in-house. But its arguably worth it. Many people view video with the sound switched off. Therefore, captions are a way of immediately drawing interest without relying on audio. Captions also make your content more accessible to people with hearing difficulties. Taking the time to add them shows that you care about inclusivity.
